Lin Zexu Statue
in the East Broadway, New York City 2007

Lin Zexu was the Chinese national hero born in Fuzhou, my hometown.
He was a Qing Dynasty commissioner well known for his effort in Opium War. After this war, Hong Kong was colonized by British for hundred years and handovered on 1 July 1997.

The reason of setting up Lin Zexu statue in this area, also related to the strong Fuzhou community near by East Broadway.

When I worked in Taiwan residency programme during National Day of Taiwan 2006, I could not found “Chung Hua” pencil, which made in China and I used it during childhood in China and Hong Kong, but in Taiwan, only thing I found was “Liberty” pencil.
I was so disappointed that they transposed pronunciation directly into Mandarin “Li Bai Dai”, which means “good for hundred generations”. I was glad Taiwan have “liberty” for such long time, but why they could not translated it properly?
